Excessive Screen Time in Babies Linked to Developmental Delays, New Study Finds


A recently published study has shed light on the concerning relationship between excessive screen time and developmental delays in infants. The study, featured in The Journal of the American Medical Association of Pediatrics (JAMA), hails from Japan and delves into the screen time habits of 7,097 children, investigating how these habits influence their mental and physical growth.
Parents of the children participating in the study were asked to estimate the daily average screen time their youngsters spent on activities like TV watching, tablet and phone use, video gaming, and internet engagement.
The study’s results have unveiled a significant pattern. By the age of two, infants who indulged in up to four hours of screen time daily were found to be three times more likely to experience setbacks in communication and problem-solving abilities. Those who surpassed four hours of screen time were almost six times more likely to encounter similar delays. Additionally, this latter group demonstrated a nearly twofold likelihood of possessing underdeveloped fine motor skills and personal and social skills.
For four-year-olds, extended screen time correlated with hindrances in communication, gross and fine motor skills, problem-solving capacity, and personal and social skills.
Dr. John Hutton, an associate professor of general and community pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, underscored the importance of active engagement for language development, emphasizing that children learn through interactive communication.
The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for a balanced approach, suggesting no screen time for infants below one year and restricting two-year-olds to an hour of screen engagement. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, emphasized the critical role of early childhood in establishing healthy lifestyle patterns.
Beyond developmental concerns, protracted screen exposure could impact a child’s tolerance for boredom, a crucial catalyst for nurturing creativity and independent problem-solving. Dr. Hutton elucidated that discomfort can prompt children to seek creative solutions.
Unicef also highlighted that excessive screen time could impede empathy development, as growing brains require external stimuli for optimum growth. The report highlighted that screen usage takes away from activities fostering brain development, such as playtime and peer interaction.
The study’s insights unveiled that merely 4% of the surveyed infants surpassed four hours of daily screen time. Additionally, 18% reported between two and four hours, while the majority reported under two hours. Infants with higher screen time often had younger first-time mothers, lower household incomes, lower maternal education levels, and instances of postpartum depression.
